What's Your Name and Where Do You Come From?

What's Your Name and Where Do You Come From? September 18, 2008

I came across this interesting website that maps your surname, showing where your extended family comes from. It’s fascinating that most people don’t seem to move very far from their place of birth, and as a result, there are strong concentrations of surnames in particular countries, regions, and even cities.

So, for Warnock, I found the following countries most strongly represented. The figures represent the number of Warnocks per million of population.

NEW ZEALAND — 60.08
IRELAND — 50.74
AUSTRALIA — 50.35
GREAT BRITAIN — 42.27
CANADA — 37.36
UNITED STATES — 23.71
If you hone into regions, then the figures per million of the top regions climb significantly:

NORTH WEST, IRELAND — 472.34
SOUTHLAND REGION, NEW ZEALAND — 304.29
OTAGO REGION, NEW ZEALAND — 181.05
WESTERN AUSTRALIA, AUSTRALIA — 169.38
SCOTLAND, GREAT BRITAIN — 149.72
NORTH EAST, IRELAND — 145.26
MANAWATU-WANGANUI REGION, NEW ZEALAND — 133.7
SOUTH AUSTRALIA, AUSTRALIA — 107.78
GEORGIA, UNITED STATES — 87.39
OREGON, UNITED STATES — 83.68
The site also lists the top cities for Warnocks without the population rates:

CAROL STREAM, ILLINOIS, UNITED STATES
ANTIOCH, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES
CARLISLE, NORTH, GREAT BRITAIN
IPSWICH, EAST ANGLIA, GREAT BRITAIN
FERNDALE , WALES , GREAT BRITAIN
ANTRIM, NORTHERN IRELAND, GREAT BRITAIN
FALKIRK, SCOTLAND, GREAT BRITAIN
FAYETTEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA, UNITED STATES
CARRICKFERGUS, NORTHERN IRELAND, GREAT BRITAIN
It’s a fascinating way to spend a few minutes learning more about your tribe.
