Today in 1856 my friends at Christian Heritage London reminded us, a great trial of depression was unleashed on Spurgeon.  We quite rightly think of him as a great preacher. But in an instant, he was transported into great depression. This was not the only time he experienced depression, either. None of us is immune from the troubles this world.  For Spurgeon the trigger was the carnage and death unleashed when someone cried out ‘Fire!’ during a gathering of 12,000... Read more

A friend of mine, Ben Virgo is helping to organise a day of apologetics training here in London this Saturday, 8 October 2016.  If you are free, I strongly recommend this event. It will also include a walking tour of London over lunch, pointing out places of interest where significant events in church history have occurred. MORE DETAILS AND BOOK HERE Read more

Do you ever feel down? Do you ever feel at a low point? I have had a few months myself recently where things have been quite tough. Thankfully the corner is now turning for me.  But even at my lowest point, I have never got as low as the Apostle Paul did. The following verses from 2 Corinthians are very encouraging. We learn three critical points: Even a great Christian like the Apostle Paul is NOT immune to suffering, and not immune... Read more

UPDATE: turns out I missed the most important argument for remain. It makes it easier for the gospel to spread by church planters continuing to be free to relocate across the continent. Not for the first time Terry Virgo has shown me the way.  Right up to today, I have been undecided  about how I should vote in the referendum on whether or not the UK should leave the EU. But this weekend I have made up my mind. And... Read more

The following is an except from my guest post over at Crossway today, the following points are all explained more fully in the post itself, 10 Things You Should Know about the Resurrection 1. The resurrection is the core of the Christian message and should never be neglected or assumed. 2. Belief in Jesus’s physical resurrection is the defining doctrine of Christianity (Romans 10:9). 3. The resurrection demonstrated to the whole universe the deity of Jesus and God’s love for... Read more

At the weekend I attended the Christian Medical Fellowship Student Conference. It was so encouraging to see hundreds of bright young medical students gathering to hear God’s Word, and learn Christian principles that will help them at work. If you are a Christian Doctor, Nurse, or a student working towards such a career in the UK, I would certainly recommend this organization. Among many events they organize, in April they will be doing a Psychiatry Day Conference. I was asked... Read more

“the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations”‭‭(Romans‬ ‭1:5‬) This is Pauls mission statement. His reason to live. His goal in life. And it should be the goal of every Chrisrian minister, indeed of every Christian: to bring about the obedience of faith in themselves and others. One thing I love about the ESV is that it doesn’t seem to explain phrases that could be ambiguous. This is one such example. I can think... Read more

“And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?””(‭‭Mark‬ ‭15:34‬ ) To the Muslim the idea that a prophet could die a cruel death on a cross is anathema. To the 1st century Jew it wasn’t exactly what they expected from their  long awaited Messiah. To those of us who believe Jesus was and is the Eternal Son of God it should be... Read more

“And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.”‭‭(Mark‬ ‭14:72‬) We live in times that are remarkably hostile to Christians. I have written before about how at times the wisdom of Mordecai is entirely appropriate for us to follow. In many workplaces people keep it more professional these days and don’t talk about any outside interests.... Read more
