If like me you love biography and are fascinated by the man who is in the authors view the greatest to have ever occupied No 10 Downing Street you will love this book. I just finished it and wanted to record some thoughts for prosterity. Churchill was an amazing man and was known to have created the term ‘terminological inexactitude’ (p112) a fairly typical game with words for him. He was a definite rascal and not always popular by a... Read more

Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, ‘This was their finest hour.'” Of the Battle of Britain ‘Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.’ After the war- ‘From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the Continent. ‘ Read more

“Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we... Read more

“You ask, what is our policy? I can say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory,... Read more

These are some quotes from a compilation by Dominique Enright of Churchills pithy humour ‘I am ready to meet my maker- but whether my maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter’ ‘If Hitler invaded Hell, I would at least make a favourable reference to the Devil in the House of commons’ (said when Russia was invaded by Germany) ‘He is a modest man who has a great deal to be modest about’ When proposing... Read more

A Debtor to Mercy Alone: “A debtor to mercy alone, of covenant mercy I sing; Nor fear, with Thy righteousness on, my person and off ring to bring. The terrors of law and of God with me can have nothing to do; My Savior’s obedience and blood hide all my transgressions from view. The work which His goodness began, the arm of His strength will complete; His promise is Yea and Amen, and never was forfeited yet. Things future, nor... Read more

Amazing how drained I feel after giving any talk but most especially a sermon. Satisfied, yes but drained. I really felt that I was carried along this morning which was all the more remarkable given the slightly less than satisfactory (in my view) state of the preparation! There was a positive response though including one convinced that there was much perparation behind it- if only he knew how little there was compared to some of my other talks! Mind you... Read more

It is almost exactly 40 years since the march on Washington led by Martyn Luther King. Has his dream been fulfilled? To some degree yes but are blacks and whites in the USA brothers? Do they sit down in that way- I suspect not. I delight in being part of a multiracial church but am painfully aware that in the UK we are the exception rather than the rule. Having said that I still believe as I am sure M-L-K... Read more
