If you’re waiting for a sign in your life to tell you something, you’ll likely miss it. A sign, when in the context of spirituality, often refers to something seen or heard with significant meaning for the receiver, when others may not find meaning at all. Signs can give us clarity and spiritual direction in our lives. If you want some help with how to seek these signs, keep reading. I’ve included an exercise at the end of this blog.
Hearing about signs is one of the most common things within the broader pagan community. Signs can come in the form of divination, psychic messages from other spiritual realms, and omens. And we all seem to be waiting for them, for loads of different reasons. Well, the action of waiting for them seems to send out an energy that tells the world you’re not ready for what you need to hear.
You may be missing important signs simply through action and inaction:
- “I’m not sure which direction I’m going” – are you repeatedly saying this and aren’t making progress? Flip the script on what you’re manifesting and try saying, “I’m open to the options before me”. Speaking isn’t the only part of good manifestation, but words are power and you can start changing your mindset.
- Do you constantly perform divination for yourself, ignoring repeated messages? I know I have. When I was newly reading tarot years ago, the 2 of swords haunted me for years until I decided to work with it and listened to what it was telling me.
- Do you reflect on your daily life, and magickal practice, with journaling? One of the most helpful ways to see patterns and signs in our lives is to write it down, rereading through for key themes after. Sometimes these signs come to us unconsciously throughout our daily activities, only seen when reflecting. Journaling also helps to unburden the mind, allowing for more insightful dreams.
A Word on Boundaries
We aren’t always looking for signs, even if others want to give them to us. Whether the spiritual guidance is coming from someone here in the physical world or through a spiritual experience, we witches get to set the boundaries. Our personal time is our own. Our dreamtime is our own. Our magick circles are our own. We can choose when, and how we receive signs.
Do a check in with your own boundaries and build them well. If you find that you get bombarded with spirits contacting you, it’s worth working on your boundaries. (Need help with boundary setting? Check out this blog and this one.) If you get bombarded by psychic “friends” with spiritual messages, it’s time to speak out ya mouth and let them know what is and isn’t wanted. Clear is kind.
Connecting to the Liminal – Doorway Exercise
Doorways serve as easily accessible liminal spaces. If you have something you need guidance on, go seek it! This simple exercise can be used as is, or you can add it to a ritual with as much complexity as you like in terms of circle casting/sacred space.
Take time to stand or sit in a doorway, close your eyes, and breathe deeply. With each breath in and out, envision the veil just before you thinning and parting. Do this to the count of ten breaths. At the count of ten, open your eyes with a soft, unfocused gaze. Listen with physical ears and psychic senses to what is going on around you. Look with physical eyes and your second sight for what is before you. Do particular spirit beings or animals come before you? What message does that spirit carry? You can always look it up in a correspondence book or, in the case of animals/plants, flora and fauna books to get a good sense of their innate messages and magickal qualities.
When you have received your message(s), thank your spirit guides and those who brought the messages to you. Close your eyes again, and take ten deep breaths in and out to bring you back into the physical reality, fully grounded into the earth.
