A few months ago John Legend released one of those songs that really resonated with me. In “All of Me” John sings about loving someone wholly and this morning I reflected on it as I thought about the nature of love. While the song talks about love from a romantic perspective, it speaks to me on so many levels. Loving someone for their “curves and all [their] edges” or with their imperfections speaks to the love we have the capacity... Read more

I walked down the block, smoothie in hand, trying to figure out what I wanted for lunch. I passed it, not understanding that it belonged to her and she was the divine reason for my indecision. The it was a home constructed of cardboard boxes and old milk crates; her name was Arafa. I passed the structure and saw the backside of a sign, curiosity making me walk around to read. The Church is tearing my heart apart Loud voices, court cases War cry of religious liberty instead of freedom in Christ I weep Tears offered for strangers, wounded by brothers Imposing boundaries crafted by bigotry Hate is not our way The Way is Love personified Arms stretched out and spirit offered to cover you From pain From sin From being sinned against I’m sorry I apologize for grace failing us and you and causing scars you can never fully show... Read more

Today, thousands of people will march through the streets of my city. Some will march for equality, others for the right to be acknowledged and some simply for the community found in the love poured out during NYC Pride. You will find as many reasons as people but for me Pride has a special place in my heart because it is the anniversary of the day God broke my heart and caused me to come undone. A year ago today,... Read more

I wrote the following piece a year ago. In honor of Pride and all that God has done in my heart since then, I am reposting it on Chasing the Promise. May we forever remember the days that God does something special in our hearts and challenges us. ‘ve spent 26 summers in NYC and I’ve never gone to Pride. There are a lot of other things I’ve never done but in my 27th year I feel God stretching me... Read more

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ. Some days people push you. They tick you off, purposely push your buttons and do things that make you see red and want to lash out in anger. The anger raging inside you is justified and you think up... Read more

My friends and I are the sort to have code speak for things. I’m not quite sure of how it happened but somewhere towards the end of college, referencing Harry Potter to talk about emotionality became a thing with us… Actually, I do remember. It had something to do with Hollins Ring Night and alternate universe HP characters (crossdressing Dumbledore, slutty Hermoine, d-bag Ron, etc.). For some reason we decided that Harry should be emo and for the better... Read more
