John 13:12-15 After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, “Do you understand what I was doing?  You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. There are moments when you see something that... Read more

In a talk where she shared her opinions of the forthcoming SCOTUS decision regarding same-sex marriage, conservative religious commentator Sandy Rios noted that Christians should “prepare for martyrdom” in the event that the nation’s highest court ruled in favor of same-sex unions. Excuse me? Martyrdom?!?!? So, to be clear,  in the event of same-sex couples being able to get married Christians should be prepared to be killed for their faith? There’s been a fair amount of noise in my world lately. Noisy bars, trivia games, conversations, media updates, Netflix marathons – it’s been beautiful. Beautiful, noisy distraction. I acknowledge that they’re distractions. And for me distractions are sometimes necessary. See, I’m fairly cerebral. I start to think and continue to think and keep on thinking until I desperately need pause. I feel that’s what these first two months of the year have been for me. I have filled them with... Read more

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” Revelation 3:20 Today I woke up and did my normal routine: hit snooze 3 times, read my daily scripture, checked my social media. Tonight I lifted glass to lips and hands to pray for my people Over empty bottles and solidarity circles we spoke of you Ferguson We lament for you We grieve for your streets stained crimson and your courts colored unjust Injustice should not stand But tonight it did As it seems to do for our people You are not alone You are not abandoned We hold you in our hearts For you are beloved Read more

You are my undoing Holy fire, burn me up I am ashes Use me for anointing I am overcome Take these tears and use them as baptismal water for others Those who will be found Because as long as I have breath I will search for them As you have searched for me And I will seek to love Because I have encountered Love personified Read more

This is where I want to stand. In the doorway or on the steps telling passersby that this place, this Church, belongs to you. It belongs to us crazy, radical, alternative, fighter, messy, messed up, broken, wonderful people because Jesus spoke to the margins. He spoke to those of us who don't quite fit and reminds us that the kingdom of God not only belongs to us, it lies within us. And if others try and keep us out of the Church we will find community on those steps as we work to prepare the building for us all. Read more
