Exploring Culture with a High Mind: Our Podcast

Exploring Culture with a High Mind: Our Podcast November 3, 2024

Hey everyone, it’s Matthew J. DiStefano here. If you know me, you know that adding a podcast to my schedule might sound like adding an extra hat to an already overcrowded stand. But when the idea of High Minds, co-hosted with my friend Andy Colenzo, came up, I knew this wasn’t just another podcast—it was the podcast to shake up your weekly routine.

We’re not here to regurgitate political sound bites or saturate you with headlines that have already been worn thin. No, High Minds is about taking a step back, lighting up a conversation (pun intended), and diving into culture, sports, and entertainment with a fresh perspective. This isn’t just another show. It’s where we can laugh at our shared stories, dissect why trends catch fire, and, yes, occasionally explore how cannabis colors our understanding of life, music, and just about everything in between.

Why You Should Tune In

What sets High Minds apart? For starters, we don’t hold back from discussing anything—from the lighthearted nostalgia of growing up in the pre-internet age to the stranger-than-fiction spectacle of today’s digital world. Remember ASL (age, sex, location) in those old chat rooms? Yeah, we’ve been around long enough to laugh about that. Or how about the shift from the innocence of prank-filled childhoods to today’s TikTok-famous stunts? We’re exploring how culture evolves and what it says about us.

A Bit of Sports, A Dash of Humor

If you’re a sports junkie, we’ve got you covered—but don’t expect just scores and stats. We talk about the weird conspiracies, like whether the NFL has a secret script for every season (seriously, Jets fans, given your huge market, how would you explain your perpetual state?). Andy and I even delve into the nostalgia of wrestling back when it was WWF, not WWE, and before Hulk Hogan turned out to be… well, problematic to say the least. And if you’re here for the pop culture moments that make you shake your head, you’re in the right place. Aaron Rodgers and his complicated relationship with my hometown of Chico, anyone?

The Culture Clash: From Internet Fame to Personal Growth

A recurring theme on High Minds is the internet’s role as both the best and worst thing to ever happen to us. We grew up in the time of dial-up and dying of dysentery on the Oregon Trail, so seeing how today’s social media-fueled frenzy influences society is mind-boggling. Whether we’re analyzing influencers buying followers to inflate their worth or laughing about viral videos, our discussions are rooted in the genuine curiosity of how we got here and where we’re going.
