6 Key States and Numerous Local Elections Crucial for American Muslims October 27, 2016

Florida

EmergeUSA’s Florida chapter is conducting candidate forums across the state, providing community members a chance at an open dialogue with future leadership in their home districts. Through these forums, candidates can address community concerns directly while showing solidarity with American Muslims during this divisive political season.

In the diverse 14th corridor, Temple Terrace is a city of a little more than 24,000 residents. Here, Wael Odeh, an American Muslim, is seeking a seat on city council to help build a stronger relationship with American Muslims in the greater political space.

In South Florida, EmergeUSA is supporting candidates like Senator Dwight Bullard in District 40 to maintain his seat. As a constant ally of the community, Senator Bullard has stood with American Muslims on every divisive bill that hits the Florida senate. We are also working with candidates like former Florida State Rep. Linda Stewart, now running in contentious race for Senate District 13 in Central Florida. Stewart has been a community ally long before it was popular.

Across our regions from Jacksonville, to Tampa, to Orlando, Miami Dade and Fort Lauderdale we are conducting phone banks every night to recruit community members to join our EmergeUSA team at the polls on Election Day and vote.

We have also implemented an active Masjid captain program, in which volunteers meet candidates at the mosques, introduce them to the community, register voters and participate in our selection process, and in turn create stronger relationships with local politicians and learn the political process. Our Florida team is on the ground seven days a week, ensuring American Muslims are properly represented at the polls and working to swing our state in the direction that represents our values as a community. – Tamara Ayon, EmergeUSA
