September: Noor Tagouri and the Playboy Controversy

Muslims love to argue over what Muslim women choose to wear or not and how they exert themselves in the public eye. It’s a story that never dies. September was no different with aspiring news anchor Noor Tagouri appearing (fully clothed) in Playboy as part of their “Renegades” issue. Muslim Facebook pretty much exploded in debate over her decision. This article by Zehra Rizavi argued that Tagouri’s push for Muslim women’s empowerment was admirable and understandable, but Playboy was not the medium (with its decades long history of misogyny and the objectification of women) for it.
