The Churches Not-So-Subtle-Affair with Politics

Megalomaniactic Pastors-Andy-Gill-Patheos

You might be a white supremacist if a Christian conference you attended had Duck Dynasty as one of their keynote speakers…

It’s interesting to note that as church attendance has declined within the millennial demographic so also has our involvement with certain political affiliates.

We not only refuse to identify as Christians but, we’re refusing to identify with certain political parties. I’m not just referring to the religious right; it’s us too (progressives, that is). Billy Graham meeting with nearly every president that was in office during his time as an active “evangelist.” Saddleback hosting one of the debates between McCain and Obama. Progressives running for office (NJ guy).

It’s not that we think politics don’t matter; it’s that we’re disgusted by the affair the supposed Bride of Christ has been having with these political parties.

It’s not that the church is just attentive to politics; it’s that we’re controlled by politics. Shouldn’t it, at the very least, be the opposite way around..? Which is the crux of the matter… politics have seemingly co-opted the Church.

Millennials are walking lie-detectors. Personally, when I sit down with pastors and ask them point blank questions, it’s disappointing to watch them lie, deflect and mostly just sit there and squirm.

Transparency is key. If a leader feels as if they can’t be transparent, they might not be liars, but, they also might not be suited for the pulpit.

As I’ve said before a lot of this isn’t having to do with pastors; it has just as much to do with us as congregants. It’s easier to shout at players from the sidelines; it’s better, though, to get in the game and make a positive difference. Those of us who’ve been hurt, unimaginably abused, and/or exiled from the Church, in due time, my prayer is that we’ll be able to find meaning in our past sufferings for the sole purpose of understanding how vital we are to changing the Church for the better.
