A Tragedy

A Tragedy October 11, 2011

I was planning on writing a post tonight about our first real homeschooling test, and how I failed it, and the realization that led me to. I’ll still write that post, but not tonight.

I happened to click over to Dr. Nadal’s blog before I started writing, and everything that has happened in the last few days which I was completely unaware of have made my own trials seem much less important.

Students for Life of America has lost Kortney Blythe Gordon, their national field director, and her unborn daughter Sophy in a car accident. Jon Scharfenberger, another staff member, has been critically injured. Two other staff members were seriously injured but expected to recover.

Most of you who read my blog probably know that my heart truly lies with the pro-life movement. While I do not (and cannot) personally understand the pain of living with a past abortion, I do know the grace that comes with accepting the gift of life, even in bad circumstances. At the same time, I understand what desperation would drive a woman to seek an abortion. Eventually, I hope to dedicate my life to the cause of offering love and help to women and men who find themselves in situations that seem hopeless. I know what a gesture of love in a time of crisis can mean to a person.

Right now, though, I have little people who need me to give my life to them. I also have lessons to learn before I can be an effective pro-life witness. I can be judgmental. I can be too arrogant and prideful.  I must root out those sins in myself before I can turn to someone else with truly open arms.

But these people, this woman and her baby who have gone to their rest, this man who is fighting for his life, and their families…they’ve made the sacrifice. I would ask that you join me in the novena that Dr. Nadal is holding on his blog. Even if you’re not Catholic, you could click over there and pray with us. Even if you’re not religious, you could take a moment and think of this woman and her child, the husband and father they left behind, and this man and his family who are fighting for his life.

Thank you, all of you, for your prayers, your thoughts, and your sympathy.
