Sorry dudes. My parents have been in town for the weekend so I’ve been busy basking in their wonderful parent-ness. I missed them so much. I’ll be off the internets till tomorrow, but in the meantime, I’ve been nominated for an award in a couple categories at Bonnie’s Sheenazing Blogger Awards. The categories I’m nominated in are Funniest Blog, Most Inspiring Blog, Best Mommy Blogger, Smartest Blog, and Blog with the Best Memes. I really wish there had been a... Read more

I had a post I wanted to write today, but I’m having trouble saying it the right way. At the risk of not doing justice to the cause so many are marching for in Washington, DC today, I’ve decided instead to re-publish an old post of mine. For a different perspective on the pro-choice vs. pro-life argument, go see Kassie, who’s pondering the lives of the women in China and India who do not freely choose abortion and infanticide. ***... Read more

In case you missed it, and I hope desperately that you did, I was on Patrick Madrid’s radio show yesterday afternoon after stepping into the middle of a little Twitter dust-up over female Catholic bloggers cussing. Naturally, I was defending the practice of cussing, because I ♥ that shit. Also naturally, I was mostly incoherent through the steady stream of “ummming” I was doing. It’s been years since I regularly had intelligent conversations that required quick thinking (with my mouth,... Read more

OMG. Simcha had this on her facebook feed this morning and I watched it out of curiosity, having never paid much attention to the whole Voris phenomenon except idly chuckling at that inane “Lenten cruise” thing. But this. This is so embarrassing. No wonder people call us wing-nuts. Um, hey, Michael? Guess what America wasn’t founded on? Catholic principles. Actually, the people who founded America were pretty much running from exactly the kind of “benevolent dictatorship” you’re talking about here... Read more

Today is day four of the bishops’ call to prayer, penance, and pilgrimage to end abortion. My fellow Patheos blogger, the Crescat, wrote a haunting post this weekend that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about. Mostly I keep thinking, “that could have been me. That could have been my baby, my Sienna, dismembered in that canister. If things had been different, it would have been.” This morning it occurred to me that no, in fact, it couldn’t have... Read more

#7 Holy cheez-its, you guys. It’s cold outside. Look at that shizzle! Yeah, I realize that 69 is not considered “cold” in the rest of the country, but I’ve been living on a steady diet of 80-90 degree days with 90% humidity. I’ll take what I can get. #6 However, I must admit that the sight of all the wee Floridian children walking to school bundled up like this kid against the Arctic 50 degree wind was hilarious. #5 Speaking... Read more

Yesterday there was a bit of a kerfluffle between the Crescat and the group Abolish Human Abortion. It started on facebook and escalated into a series of blog posts between the two, which I read with amusement that quickly turned to sadness. For her part, the Crescat seemed genuinely surprised that such deep-seeded anti-Catholicism still existed, to which I responded, “You must not have been to Texas lately.” Yes, my friends, anti-Catholicism is alive and well. Not the obvious kind,... Read more

First things first. The USCCB has organized “Nine Days of Prayer, Penance and Pilgrimage” to coincide with Roe v. Wade and the March for Life. Because they’re getting all technologically savvy these days, they’ve set up a totally neat system to make this novena a communal effort. All you have to do is text “9days“ to 99000 to receive the novena by text message. This is really awesome, especially for people like me who usually forget about the novena by... Read more

I kind of feel like an asshat this morning. The post I meant to write yesterday is not the post I actually wrote yesterday. The post was meant to say this: budgeting sucks, but I’m glad I have to do it. I’m pretty sure what I wrote was this: Wah Wah WE’RE SO POOR someone give me money wah wah I can’t afford food for my kids POOR ME LIFE TOTALLY SUCKS TRIPLE WAH! Ahem. Allow me to try again.... Read more

Only now, it isn’t pregnancy-induced migraines and hospital horror stories. On Friday night I sat down to plan the week’s menu and write the grocery list. I used to love this task…perusing my favorite cooking websites, looking forward to trying new spices or cooking techniques, idly wondering what sort of wine would go best with which meal. That was back when I thought we were struggling financially, before I understood what that really meant. Now, meal planning is much different.... Read more
