Prov. 11.22 says this—- “Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion.” To really appreciate the incongruity the writer is pointing out, one must remember that pigs were considered very unclean animals, and no Jew should come in contact with, much less eat their meat in any form. This is why the story of the Gerasene demoniac in the Gospels would have been humorous to early Jews— well of course unclean spirits... Read more
Here’s an early Christian perspective on the Christian life in a non-Christian world and how we should view it. But while living in both Greek and barbarian cities, as each have obtained by lot, and while following the local customs both in clothing and in diet and in the rest of life, they demonstrate the wonderful and most certainly strange character of their own citizenship. What is in many ways my most important book of a lifetime of scholarship is Biblical Theology: The Convergence of the Canon. It will be released the last day of this month, and at $34.99 for the paperback for over 500 pages of material it is a bargain considering how much this book contains. If you read the editorial reviews and endorsements, you will find that it is called by Scot McKnight the textbook on this subject for the foreseeable... Read more

A good time was had by all. Here are some shots…. Who’s that guy in the Tie Dye Led Zep T shirt? For those not in... Read more

It is no secret I enjoy novels about ancient Rome set in or around the NT period. I’ve read all of the novels of Stephen Saylor, Colleen McCullough, and Lindsey Davis and now have found a new writer, Bill O’Malley who has recently published (apparently self-published) his first novel that involves two of my favorite ancient figures— Julius Caesar and Lucius Seneca. Since these two men lived in very different eras of Roman history, the bridge between them is made... Read more
