I read this on the news as I was getting my nails done and was filled with sorrow for this officer and his family.  The Daily Mail reports:

A veteran Houston police officer who died while trying to get to work told his wife, ‘I’ve got work to do’ when she begged him to stay home.

Sgt Steve Perez, 60, was driving in downtown Houston when he found himself trapped in torrents of water on Sunday.

He had left his home at 4am, and tried for two hours to reach his duty station in downtown Houston before attempting to reach the nearest police station, as is department protocol.

People like this Sgt. Perez – this law enforcement officer – are part of the men and women who get criticized and ridiculed everyday by Black Lives Matter – unhinged protesters – even NFL players. (Think of Colin Kaepernick and the “pig” socks he wore to disparage the police.  The player, responding to the outrage, wrote, “I wore these socks, in the past, because the rogue cops that are allowed to hold positions in police departments, not only put the community in danger, but also put the cops that have the right intentions in danger by creating an environment of tension and mistrust.”  Please.) Yet, even amidst the criticism, the mockery, the distrust, the unfair accusations, and the lies…  they still go out and risk their lives to serve US.

Yes, to serve the same people that hate them, and ridicule them.  Yes, even if millionaire celebrity football players choose to depict them as farm animals.

This should say something about how much more respect we need to have for them.

It infuriates me to think about the amount of disrespect these officers get. I, for one, am inspired and feel a great debt to America’s law enforcement community.  Thank you for the the way you still get up to protect and serve us.
