In a recent blog post, I wrote about Yasmin Seweid, the 18-year-old Muslim college student who concocted an elaborate story about being attacked by white male Trump supporters while riding a New York City subway. Well, as it turns out, she may have had a very good reason to lie.

Seweid had told officers that these men were yelling at her to get out of the country, called her a terrorist, and tried ripping off her hijab. It sounded terrible. It was a story she continued to tell investigators over and over. But nothing turned up from her description of her alleged attackers and then the girl went missing for a day soon after. Police became suspicious that their “victim” was lying. She finally confessed and blamed it all on “family problems.” Unfortunately, filing a false police report could land her in jail for up to two years!

So, why risk that if it never happened? Trey Sanchez at TruthRevolt reports:

[T]he picture is becoming a lot clearer, now, due to further explanations of what those “family problems” were. From The New York Daily News:

“Police sources say Seweid made up the story because she didn’t want to get in trouble for breaking her curfew after being out late drinking with friends.

“Her strict, Muslim parents allegedly forced Seweid to shave her head over the incident and were upset that she was dating a Christian, sources said.”

According to Yahoo! Finance, Seweid’s father, and Egyptian immigrant Sayeed, said, “You try to raise your children as best you can. Maybe she was afraid that night. She was running late.”

It appears she was afraid that night; afraid what her parents might do. And it’s quite telling that her best idea to avoid those consequences was to fabricate a religiously motivated attack, lie to police, and potentially face two years in jail. What was the alternative?

We’ve heard about “strict, Muslim families” before and many times a child’s disgrace of their parents ends with a so-called honor killing. Let’s hope that was never the case here, but Seweid must have had enough fear of the consequences of drinking, coming home late, and dating a Christian that she was willing to go to jail than get home to her dad.

It’s a sad story all around.
