Our next author is unique because besides writing characters in various situations where they are discussing and defending Catholic faith, he also draws them. Besides being a writer, David is also an artist who creates a Catholic web comic. He puts a lot of his Catholic faith into his work, and the results are fun and fascinating. He invites you into his unique little world. So now it’s time to
Meet the Writer of It’s Iimi! Comics
David Wanat

1. Tell something interesting about yourself.
Like my protagonist, I have Aspergers syndrome. Like the character of the principal, I have a prosthetic. Before “It’s Iimi!” became a webcomic in 2020, my site was a blog called “Arnobius of Sicca,” running back to 2007 (the first two years were on Xanga and are now lost) before it became “If I Might Interject.” The protagonist’s nickname comes from the initials of “If I Might Interject.”

2. What makes a good Catholic writer?
I think it’s a combination of knowledge of the Catholic Faith and the ability to present it in a way that holds the reader’s attention. Maybe someday I’ll get there.
3. What do you like about being a Catholic/Christian Writer?
In my case, it’s showing how the Catholic beliefs and morals are reasonable, not arbitrary, and trying to put it in a story that entertains.
4. What is the Main focus of your particular writing, or what do you like to write about?
It’s a webcomic that explores the Catholic Faith through the story of a group of Catholic teens (soon to be college students). Often, an issue arises from attacks on the Church that I see on social media. But I try not to have any “cardboard villains.” Even if an antagonist is hostile to the Church, I try to explore what made them that way.
5. How does your Catholic Faith influence your writing?
Without it, I wouldn’t have a comic. Or if I did, it would be just one more bit of clutter on the internet. It’s the characters living as Catholic that drives the story.
6. What’s your favorite article/Post/book/story you have written?
That’s hard to say. The oldest were pretty primitive in appearance and storytelling. Thankfully, I’ve gotten better. Whether that’s good enough for the reader, I don’t know.
7. What is your favorite topic/subject to write about?
The topics are shaped by the needs of the time. But the focus is on defending the Catholic Faith logically.
8. Favorite scripture verse.
I believe in Jesus. I believe He established the Catholic Church. If I accept those premises, I need to trust that He is in control.

9. What are you currently working on?
The current issue that I was wrapping up at the time I wrote out these questions is about a quote from a Taoist philosopher. Iimi addresses why it is incompatible with her beliefs.

10. Name a favorite saint or Catholic or some other figure who inspires you in your life.
My patron saint is St. Augustine.’

11. Who is your favorite Living Writer?
Peter Kreeft’s books were inspiring in the creation of Iimi and in her defense of the Church.

12. If you could have lunch with any deceased writer, who would it be, what would you eat, and what would you talk about?
That’s a challenging one. Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen and GK Chesterton are two I’d like to talk with about how to express the Faith in an engaging style. What to eat? Maybe Pizza?

13. Name a favorite movie/tv show or music you find worth sharing with others.
I tend to be text-oriented. I don’t know if any of what I watch would be worthy of sharing. I do enjoy the old Robert Stack “Untouchables” and the Peter Graves “Mission: Impossible.” RoboCop was probably the first movie I saw that made me start thinking about morality and eventually led me to take my Catholic Faith seriously. I don’t recommend others do that, however.
14. Can you see one of your books being made into a movie or tv series?
I’d like to see “It’s Iimi” become an anime-style cartoon. But I don’t think that standing around doing religious and philosophical dialogues would work well in that medium.

15. Favorite Historical event.
The Resurrection.

The day these events took place
1896 – In Athens, the opening of the first modern Olympic Games is celebrated, 1,500 years after the original games are banned by Roman emperor Theodosius I.

1974 – The first California Jam festival takes place at the Ontario Motor Speedway in Ontario, California. Co-headlined by Deep Purple and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. The festival set what were then records for the loudest amplification system ever installed, the highest paid attendance, and highest gross in history.

16. What else do you want people to know about anything?
I think that loving Christ requires fidelity to the Church that He established and gave authority to Teach, Bind, and Loose in His name. We can’t separate Christ from His Church. The other side of that is, if I do see someone in the Church behaving in a troublesome manner, I remind myself that God is in control, and the gates of hell will not prevail.
