Great Places To Find a Free Bible

Great Places To Find a Free Bible August 18, 2014

In many developed countries it is easy to find a Bible. This is because places that have them can usually be found in most communities. However, some people do not have the money to buy a Bible despite the fact that they may want one. For that reason, it is good to know if there are any great places to find a free Bible.

Some local churches provide free Bibles

Some local churches will provide a free Bible if asked. Often you will find that if a church calls itself a “Bible church” they will have Bibles available for someone who needs one. The easiest way to find out is by calling the church, but a better idea would be to stop by the church and attend a service. That way you can also check into possibly attending a Bible study. After the service is done, ask the minister if they might be able to provide you with a Bible.

In my own church ministry, we used to offer to send someone a free study Bible, but we started getting requests from all over the world. Unfortunately, the shipping costs alone made it impossible to afford. Likewise, many people that we gave free Bibles to locally admitted not using them so we started handing out very inexpensive basic print Bibles like those that can be typically found in a dollar store.

Bible ministries provide free Bibles

There are few Bible ministries that provide a printed Bible for no cost. One in particular is freebibles.net. They were formed in January 2000 as a nondenominational ministry that mails English and Spanish Bibles directly to individuals in need. Most of the Bibles they provide are recycled from churches and booksellers so they cannot guarantee the version they can send (1).

Another place that provides free Bibles is biblesfree.org, a small husband and wife ministry that also can provide a Bible at no cost. Like freebibles.net, they target those who cannot afford a Bible of their own. Unfortunately, these two Bible ministries are restricted because of limited funding.

Other than these two and a few others, finding a printed Bible for no cost can prove to be difficult. At the time of this writing, the list of places that provide free Bibles has dwindled from previous years. Sadly, most people will spend more money on entertainment than helping to support ministries such as these that are trying to provide a Bible to anyone who wants one but cannot afford one.

Internet and electronic Bible resources

There are many sources on the internet to access or download a free Bible. Of particular note is The Official King James Bible Online found at http://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/. Here one not only can get access to an online King James Bible, but they can also download a copy, access reading plans, look up words using a Bible dictionary, and access many other Bible study tools.

Other sources with similar free offerings are as follows:

  • The Blue Letter Bible found at http://www.blbclassic.org/
  • Bible Gateway, which can be found at https://www.biblegateway.com/
  • Wisdom4Today Library, which contains a simple text look up can be found at http://wisdom4today.org/library/
  • The Online Bible, which contains a Basic Bible Starter Pack that can be downloaded to a computer. It can be found at http://onlinebible.net/
  • E-Sword, which has a free downloadable Bible package, which can be found at http://www.e-sword.net/downloads.html

In addition to these, there are several free Bible applications that can be downloaded for Android or iPhone/iPod based devices from the Google Play Store or iTunes Store. Likewise, for those who might have the WORD Search or Olive Tree software installed on their computer there are apps available, which run these Bible software applications on their mobile devices.

Helping others to supply free Bibles

As mentioned previously, access to free copies of the Bible is limited. This makes is important to support those ministries that make it their mission to provide Bibles. Of particular note is an organization called Bearing Precious Seed (BPS). Bearing Precious Seed is a local church based ministry that works to translate and print Bibles in the native languages of peoples all over the world.

As a local church ministry, Bearing Precious Seed has several locations. Some of the locations are listed as follows:

  • Bearing Precious Seed Global: Based in Plantation Baptist Church located in Plantation, Florida (http://bpsglobal.org/)
  • Bearing Precious Seed, Milford: Based in First Baptist Church located in Milford, Ohio (http://www.bpsmilford.org/)
  • Bearing Precious Seed Lansing: Based in Parker Memorial Baptist Church in Lansing, Michigan (http://www.bpslansing.org/)
  • Bearing Precious Seed El Paso: Based in El Paso, Texas. BPS El Paso is a Bible printing ministry of the BPS Milford ministry. In addition to printing and distributing Bibles, they organize mission trips into Mexico and the local native reservations, and train missionaries.

The BPS ministries listed above are not the only churches supporting and doing the work of translating, printing, and distributing Bibles. However, more information about the work, sources for Bibles and where to get them can be obtained by contacting these ministries.

Conclusion

When it comes to getting a free printed copy of the Bible they can be found but because of the lack of funding the supplies are short. However, electronic copies are readily available. The lack of support for the translating, printing, and distributing Bibles has created a famine of God’s Word in many locations in the world. God said this would happen in the book of Amos as follows:

Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it. In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst. They that swear by the sin of Samaria, and say, Thy god, O Dan, liveth; and, The manner of Beersheba liveth; even they shall fall, and never rise up again. (Amos 8:11-14)

If each person who has the means to buy their own Bible would donate $25.00 a year to a Bible ministry, which is what they might pay to share a meal at a restaurant, there would be no shortage of Bibles available for people who really want one. Until then, many people will continue to thirst for God’s Word
