The Story Of The Birth Of Jesus In The Bible

The Story Of The Birth Of Jesus In The Bible November 27, 2015

Here is the story of Jesus birth as told in the Bible.

Jesus Prophecies

There are dozens and dozens of prophecies of Jesus’ coming, including His first, being born of a virgin as Isaiah wrote “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel (which means, God with us)(7:14) and later in chapter nine he writes “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (9:6). Even Jeremiah wrote that “In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The LORD is our righteousness’” (Jer 23:6).

Jesus Announcement

The Advent center’s around Jesus Christ’s coming of which the prophets of old wrote about and now in the New Testament, even Matthew writes “All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (Matt 1:22-23). What’s the “all this” that took place? If we read the previous verses we read that “an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit” (Matt 1:20). Joseph must have understood what the angel was talking about all of these things “took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet” Isaiah (Isaiah 7:14) so “When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus” (Matt 1:24).

Jesus’ Birth

When Caesar Augustus ordered an empire-wide registration or census (Luke 2:1) and so “all went to be registered, each to his own town. Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child”( Luke 2:3-5) but it was “while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn” (Luke 2:6-7).

Jesus as a Babe

On the eight day, “when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord” (Luke 2:22) and “there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ” (Luke 2:25-26). Joseph and Mary “marveled at what was said about him” (Luke 2:33) that Jesus would be “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel” (Luke 2:3).

Jesus as a Boy

After Joseph and Mary “had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him” (Luke 2:39-40). After Jesus had grown to age twelve, as was their custom, His family went up to the feast but after the feast, the “boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be in the group they went a day’s journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions” (Luke 2:43-46). Mary asked “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress” and “he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart” (Luke 2:49-51).

Conclusion

The conclusion of Jesus’ birth and subsequent childhood simply says, “Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man” (Luke 2:52). Jesus always did what pleased the Father and it pleased the Father to send His One and only unique Son to die on the cross to receive the wrath we were due and to take away the sins of all who would repent and believe in Him. That is the reason He came to earth.
