Eerdmans has just posted their forthcoming books for March-May. Some of the most attractive items include:
Gorman, M.J. Inhabiting the Cruciform God: Kenosis, Justification and Theosis in Paul’s Narrative Soteriology (March). Argument: cruciformity is, at its heart, theoformity (what Christian tradition has labelled ‘theosis’).
Peterson, D.G. The Acts of the Apostle (Pillar series; March). This is supposed to be especially good on literary and theological analysis. I have always liked what he has written, but I can’t say he is an Acts scholar per se. I will look into this one, but I am really waiting for Porter (NIGTC), Walton (WBC), and Loveday Alexander (BNTC) on Acts.
Witherington III, B. Imminent Domain: The Story of the Kingdom of God and Its Celebration (a short 89 pp., April). It seems common, at least in circles I run in now, to criticize Witherington, but he is a good exegete and a competent theologian. He is, especially, an incredible poet and communicator. This is a more lay-person sort of work, and much needed.
Bauckham, R. et al., The Epistle to the Hebrews and Christian Theology (464 pages; April/May). In NT studies, there is a default three section division. Gospels, Paul, and….other. That is seriously unfortunate and now scholars who normally are only associated with Gospels and/or Paul are feeling anxious about the common neglect of the ‘rest of the NT’. Hebrews is only now beginning to get the attention it deserves. Certainly we are pleased to see contributors such as Harold Attridge and Ken Schenck who are bona fide Hebrews scholars. But, what is also exciting is the non-Hebrews scholars who have come aboard on this project: Edward Adams, Loveday Alexander, Richard Bauckham, Markus Bockmuehl, Morna Hooker, Howard Marshall, Walter Moberly, Carl Mosser, Mark Nanos, Oskar Skarsaune, and Ben Witherington. I have not been able to track down any of the chapter titles except that by Richard Hays: ‘”Here We Have No Lasting City”: New Covenantalism in Hebrews’.
NOTE: Dunn’s Beginning from Jerusalem is not listed under March-May (and they have not posted their list past May). Sad.
