Ben Witherington III, Amos Professor of NT for Doctoral Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary (KY), is a highly competent interpreter of Scripture and a prolific author. We have some interesting similarities. We both studied at secular undergrads (Ben at UNC and me at Miami Univ), both did our MDIVs at Gordon-Conwell, and both did our PhD work at Univ of Durham. We both taught at Ashland Theological Seminary and I just joined the adjunct faculty (to teach for the virtual... Read more

Well, I have been using the program Dropbox for a couple of months now and I wanted to give an update. For those that don’t know, Dropbox is a program that helps you store files and access them from anywhere. Essentially, it creates a virtual folder on your desktop (that looks like any other folder) and you “drop” whatever files you want in it. This summer, my article with Horizons in Biblical Theology was published: “To Whom Was Christ a Slave (Phil 2:7)? Double Agency and the Specters of Sin and Death in Philippians” This article, which I consider to be some of my best work, was splendidly edited by Lewis Donelson who worked closely with me in revising this piece and sharpening it for publication. I will be using this as part of the reading in my Philippians exegesis course. The most recent... Read more

According to the recent job advertisement on the SBL Career Center, Univ. of Aberdeen is still searching for the next Kirby Laing Chair of NT Exegesis – a prestigious position to say the least. Ideally, it is someone that can attract American doctoral students and is not too radical. I am thinking of someone like Brian Rosner. Well, I hope they get someone excellent and soon! Read more

I am happily writing this post in my living room (on the IKEA kitchen table I just put together) in Seattle (Magnolia), WA. We have been here since Wednesday morning and have already enjoyed driving around downtown and making trips to IKEA and Starbucks. BTW – We are excited to see that Starbucks here has recycling and composting right in the store for the consumer waste!  Today, our plan is to enjoy the park by our apartment and then head... Read more

This year, when I proposed 4 papers for SBL, I was very discouraged that all 4 got rejected. Thus, it is the first time in four years I will not be presenting an academic paper at SBL (though I was invited to present in a Phd-prep workshop). I felt, therefore, that my conference experience was going to be a bit deflated. Then, I got a nice email from ETS (Evangelical Theological Society) asking me if I would participate in the... Read more
