The Day I Almost Lost My Marriage (and the One Thing I Did to Save It)

He said, “I did the laundry.”

“What?!” I blurted out in confusion having expected to hear something much more profound.

He said, “Seriously, that’s where I started. It was more than just that, of course, but I wanted to do something helpful and practical to lighten her load and let her know that she had a partner. I knew that laundry was a constant source of stress for her, so I wanted to take that off her plate. I didn’t make a big deal about it or announce that I was going to be doing it; it just did it. I washed all the clothes. I folded all the clothes and put them all away. I kept doing it. I still do it! Laundry is still my thing at home. It’s speaking her ‘Love Language’ and it’s a simple act of service I’m happy to do to show her that I care.”

He went on to say, “Of course, marriage is about a lot more than acts of service for each other. We communicate, we have date nights, we have FUN, we dream together, we pray together and we do almost everything together. We’re best friends now, but I’m convinced that the simple act of doing the laundry is what opened the door to a new beginning in our marriage. That “restart” might have been the difference between a divorce and the great marriage we have today.”

My friend’s story challenged me to ask myself, “What’s ONE THING I could start doing right now that would make a huge impact in my marriage?”
