When we carry around secrets of any kind, those secrets will not stay fully buried. They leave a residue on our attitudes and behaviors; they tend to expose themselves in unlikely ways. Most of our secrets will come out eventually and then we have to deal with the added aftermath of the secret itself plus the additional breach of trust that came with each day we chose to keep hiding it. I dealt with this in my own marriage when I tried to hide an ongoing struggle with pornography. The porn itself hurt my wife, but the choice to hide it instead of confessing it hurt her as well.
