
3. Remind your spouse of your commitment to him/her AND offer your help in finding and treating the root causes of their unhappiness. The root causes are often NOT what your spouse initially says or thinks it is.
If your spouse keeps blaming you, then I know this part of the process can be painful, because you are not the sole reason for the issues. Your spouse may have a hormonal or medical issue that is causing depression or lack of energy. Encourage him/her to get treatment. Your spouse might be wresting with sadness or regret rooted in something that happened years before and they might need professional counseling. Remain focused on finding solutions and refusing to settle for the status quo.
