The popular Catholic radio host — I’ve been on his show a couple times — spent part of last Thursday’s show chatting with a deacon candidate, Phil McCarty (from the Diocese of San Jose), two days before his ordination.
Some highlights:
“Father Jim, does it annoy you that a man like this gets to say he’s ordained when really he’s just becoming a deacon?”
“When you get ‘fake ordained,’ like the diaconate, do you have a party? Is it really ordination?”
There’s some interesting dialogue around the 13:00 mark on the subject of making a promise of obedience to a bishop and his successors.
And around the 18:00 mark, they discuss the difference between “deacon’s wives” and “wives of deacons.”
Check it out below and see what you think.
They were clearly ribbing the deacon candidate and trying to get a rise out of him. Meh. I was whelmed. It wasn’t nearly as funny as Lino & Co. thought. An opportunity to inform and catechize was, instead, a moment to mock. But maybe it’s a matter of taste. I’m sure some probably thought it was a scream.
My main takeaway: Father Jim sure laughs a lot.
UPDATE: There was some lively discussion about this piece on social media after it was posted. And late Wednesday, I got a note from Lino. Read what he had to say here.
