Last week, Cardinal Timothy Dolan raised his objections to proposed abortion legislation in New York.  Now the state Catholic Conference has issued a point-by-point memo that makes clear how extreme Governor Andrew Cuomo’s proposal really is.  The memo below comes from the conference website.  +++ Re:      The Abortion Expansion Bill “In relation to revising existing provisions of law regarding abortions” The above-referenced legislation may come before you as a stand-alone bill (such as S.438, Stewart-Cousins) or may be re-packaged... Read more

What a legacy of diakonia. A deacon friend in Ohio sent this my way, from the Toledo Blade:  Businessman Ken Cappelletty, whose life’s mission involved working for social justice causes and operating Ken’s Flower Shops for some 45 years, died Friday at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg. Mr. Cappelletty, 72, who had been ill for more than a year, died from congestive heart failure and related complications, his family said. As an ordained deacon in the Catholic Church, he... Read more

Today’s Catholic News, the web publication for the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, takes a look: With more than 50 men in formation, the vocations program of the Congregation of Holy Cross, United States Province of Priests and Brothers, is among the healthiest for Catholic religious orders in the United States. Personal attention and an engaging, interactive online social media presence have led to one of the largest seminary classes in recent years. The class comes from 15 different states,... Read more

It’s not about architecture. It’s about attitude. I write about it here:  Hey, I’m as surprised as anyone else that I feel this way. Two years ago, I rhapsodized on the Feast of Corpus Christi on the theology behind standing to receive communion, and defended it. And why not? I’ve received that way for most of my adult life; I even remember the Latin church’s experiment with intinction back in the ’70s. Standing and in-the-hand always seemed to me sensible, practical and—with proper... Read more

This afternoon, I received an e-mail from a parish in Queens, encouraging me to take part in the March for Life later this month, and it included a link to the international abortion counter. The what? Check this out.  It tracks the number of abortions worldwide every second, and continually refreshes. It was modeled on the famous clock in New York City that keeps track of the national debt.  If you thought that was sobering, spend a few minutes watching... Read more

From the Facebook page of a friend who was ordained a priest last year: On the day of my ordination I was made a Priest. Now I spend the rest of my life becoming a Priest. Or, as a wiser person than myself has noted: God loves us into being, and creates each of us for a purpose and a calling. The calling is our vocation, and our vocation is more than our work — it’s more than our doing; it is the... Read more

The Los Angeles Times notes his passing: Among the 1,100 Jews saved from the Nazis by German industrialist Oskar Schindler was an emaciated 13-year-old boy named Leon Leyson, who had to stand on a box to reach the machinery in the Krakow factory where Schindler sheltered him and his family. The boy Schindler called “Little Leyson” survived the Holocaust to start life over in Los Angeles. He taught high school in Huntington Park for 39 years, rarely mentioning to anyone the pain and perils... Read more

These guys clearly had too much time on their hands. The Facebook page for this notes: The Live Action Pixar Toy Story movie, shot-for-shot, with real people and real toys. “TS Project” started production in late June 2010 by Jonason Pauley, (then 17), and Jesse Perrotta (18). The Daily Mail actually talked to this dynamic duo, who used the soundtrack and voices from the Pixar classic for their finished product: Mr Pauley said that the two years he and Mr Perrotta... Read more

This is both heartbreaking and appalling.  From The Age in Australia: Identical twins have been killed by Belgian doctors in a unique case under the country’s euthanasia laws. The 45-year-old brothers from the Antwerp region were born deaf and sought euthanasia after finding that they would also soon go blind. They told doctors that they were unable to bear the thought of not being able to see each other again. The twins, who have not been named but have been... Read more

From Reuters:  Several hundred thousand people massed at the Eiffel Tower in Paris on Sunday to protest against President Francois Hollande’s plan to legalize gay marriage and adoption by June. Three columns of protesters, waving pink and blue flags showing a father, mother and two children, converged on the landmark from different meeting points in Paris. Many came after long train and bus rides from the provinces. Hollande has pledged to push through the law with his Socialists’ parliamentary majority... Read more
