And it features an image of a deacon, a priest and nun. Details:  Launching the billboard campaign Tuesday, Klaus Kueng, St. Polten’s bishop, described the lack of interest in the priesthood as “a huge problem.” But Lukas Leitner, whose advertising agency developed the project, was optimistic that his strategy would bear fruit. Eighty large billboards and 300 smaller electric placards are being mounted in the province of 1.6 million people. One depicts a priest, a deacon and a nun flanked... Read more

Well, this ain’t kosher.  Not at all.  Memo to CNN: what the hell are you thinking? Here’s the lowdown, from Terry Mattingly over at “Get Religion” (a blog which gets its name, you understand, because the news media doesn’t “get religion”): So, did you hear about that wild quote that the president of Chick-fil-A didn’t say the other day? Here’s a piece of a CNN report that is typical of the mainstream press coverage of this latest cyber-skirmish in America’s battles over... Read more

A stunning story of forgiveness in Ohio.  (H/T New Advent.): Ron McClary, debilitated by multiple sclerosis, lay on a stretcher yesterday at Holy Family church and tried to speak as the widow of the Columbus police officer he shot in 1979 placed her hand on his arm. As he struggled, she stopped him. “I forgive you,” Mary Hayes said, almost inaudibly. For the Rev. Kevin Lutz, the pastor of the Franklinton church, it was a moment 33 years in the... Read more

Yesterday, I had the privilege of meeting the niece of a future saint — and a personal hero — the now-Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen. Joan Sheen Cunningham dropped by the offices of CNEWA to say hello to her old friend, the agency’s president, Msgr. John Kozar. Kozar has been active (along with Cunningham) in the cause for Sheen’s canonization. Before joining CNEWA last year, he was one of Sheen’s successors as head of the Propagation of the Faith. For more,... Read more

This just in:   The Philadelphia priest at the center of the sexual abuse coverup case has been handed a long sentence by the judge overseeing the case. Monsignor William Lynn was sentenced this morning to 3-6 years in prison, just shy of the maximum 3½-7 years requested by Philadelphia prosecutors. In a harshly worded statement before handing down her sentence, Judge Teresa Sarmina said that Msgr. Lynn “knew what was right, but he chose wrong.”   She said he had supported... Read more

From Lutheran preacher and my Patheos blog neighbor Nadia Bolz-Weber.  This is one of those times when I  sat there and said to myself, in  awe and wonder and envy, “Man, I wish I’d written that.” A snip:  I had gone to New Orleans with an idea for a sermon on Mary Magdalen – a sermon about who gets to speak in the Bible and who gets to be named and blah blah blah. And just as I was about... Read more

Blogger Leo Zanchettin has details:  I just had to check in with Facebook one more time. And what did I find? Links to a video clip from MSNBC commentator Joe Scarborough this morning. He was discussing Friday night’s shooting in an Aurora, Colorado, movie theater, trying to find sense in the horrendous events. Then in the course of the conversation, Scarborough offers these words of deep wisdom and insight: As soon as I heard about this shooting, I knew who it was. I... Read more

Details:  The Lefebvrian General Chapter concluded a few days ago following the Holy See’s request for a response from the Fraternity regarding the doctrinal preamble. By accepting and signing the preamble, the Society of St. Pius X would have received canonical recognition and returned to a full communion with Rome. But the road still looks rough and rocky ahead. In a letter to District Superiors dated 18 July, the Fraternity’s Secretary General, Fr. Christian Thouvenot, provided a summary of the... Read more
