Mark Creech, leader of the Christian Action League, is not a fan of Donald Trump. In trying to explain Trump’s popularity among his fellow evangelicals, however, he offers the rather absurd explanation that it’s all because there are so few “genuine church prophets” today.
Tony Perkins delivered his “state of the family” address on Monday night. As I predicted, no mention at all of all those families led by gay people. Because those aren’t real families, you see, they’re fake families. But the speech was full of the usual blather about religious freedom being the most important thing in the world — as long as it applies only to Christians.
Every year we get innumerable predictions from the far-right of impending dystopia that always end up being false, which does nothing at all to make them rethink their positions. Right Wing Watch counts down some of the most ridiculous ones from 2015, including all that Jade Helm 15 nonsense and Biblical predictions of God’s wrath being poured out on the country.
Scott Lively, the deranged anti-gay bigot who brags about being influential in passing brutal anti-gay laws in Russia, Uganda and elsewhere, has put a list of “pro-family heroes” for 2015. It’s the usual rundown of Christian right bigots, but there’s one name that really jumps out. Among those given “honorable mention” is Christian fascist Theodore Shoebat.
Kent Hovind is out of prison after nine years for tax evasion, a sentence I’ve consistently said was too long (though the conviction was absolutely justified, in fact inevitable). Hovind told Bryan Fischer that he intends to sue the federal government for false imprisonment and seek $9 million in damages, a million dollars for every year he spent in prison.
An Alabama Supreme Court Justice is calling for state supreme courts to openly defy the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell, and it isn’t Chief Justice Roy Moore this time, it’s Justice Tom Parker. Parker used to be one of Moore’s aides and is nearly as reactionary as him, so this is hardly a surprise. Bryan Fischer had him on his show to spout his nullificationist views.
At this point, Kim Davis is like the girl in the kissing booth at a carnival. Every Christian right leader and politician is clamoring to be seen with her — you pay a dollar, you get your kiss. Ray Comfort is the latest to see dollar signs and promotional promise in Davis. He’s flying to Kentucky and bringing with him a plane carrying a banner in order to promote his anti-gay movie Audacity.
The Christian right luminaries are busy tweeting their support for Kentucky County Clerk Kim Davis and making some spectacularly stupid arguments in those tweets. The comparisons they make are not just laughable, they are precisely the opposite of reality. Kim Davis is not a brave hero fighting injustice, she is creating injustice. But Matt Barber says she’s the modern Rosa Parks:
Scott Lively, an absolutely deranged anti-gay bigot, is the one responsible for the bizarre claim that the Nazis were really butch gays trying to destroy the more effeminate ones (seriously, he wrote a whole book on this). Bryan Fischer has made it popular among a certain subset of the Christian right. Now the senior historian at the National Holocaust Museum has debunked it completely. End-times fanatic Jan Markell was a guest on Bryan Fischer’s radio show, guest hosted by Fred Jackson, and she went on a long diatribe about how the government is now going to shut down churches for not performing same-sex marriages, just like North Korea and China.
