The terminally ridiculous and authoritarian Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council is positively apoplectic about NBC taking “under God” out of the pledge of allegiance. And he’s got some demands to make it go away:

Now the council is urging its members to contact NBC and demand the network play a public service announcement featuring the Pledge of Allegiance, in its entirety, daily.

“NBC must remedy this abuse by airing a series of public service announcement(s) with the entire Pledge of Allegiance,” read an e-mail blast sent Tuesday from council President Tony Perkins.

“Please join me in contacting NBC and demanding that the network air a daily public service announcement with the entire Pledge of Allegiance.”

The Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins brings the crazy again:

“This has moved from cultural terrorism to corporate terrorism. That’s what this is. Now, back in the 80’s and early 90’s I worked with the state department in anti-terrorism and we trained about fifty different countries in defending against terrorism, and it’s, at it’s base, what terrorism is, it’s a strike against the general populace simply to spread fear and intimidation so that they can disrupt and destabilize the system of government. That’s what the homosexuals are doing here to the legal system.”

Does he really believe this? Is he THAT stupid? Or does he just know that his followers are?

You knew last weekend’s Values Voters Summit would usher forth a nearly endless stream of idiotic statements. Let’s start with this one by Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council:

“Well, those [countries] that do [allow gays to serve openly], they’re the ones that participate in parades, they don’t fight wars to keep the nation and the world free.”

Tell that to Israel, the nation you love to advocate for in every other setting. Or to Great Britain, our closest ally, which sent its military to fight side by side with us in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Here’s a clip of an amusing “debate” between David Boies, one of the attorneys for the plaintiffs in the Prop 8 challenge, and Tony Perkins, the virulent bigot who heads the Family Research Council. Boies absolutely destroys Perkins. It’s not a close call who wins.

It cracks me up that Perkins compares this to Roe v Wade in the sense that Roe was not so controversial when it was handed down and grew more controversial over time. The exact opposite will happen here. In 30 years, we will look back and be absolutely befuddled by the fact that gay marriage was ever a big deal.

In my last post about the Louisiana Family Forum, I repeated a claim that Max Blumenthal made in a Nation article. The claim was that Tony Perkins, founder of the Louisiana Family Forum and now head of the Family Research Council, had bought David Duke’s mailing list in 1996 while running the Senate campaign of Woody Jenkins. Blumenthal wrote:

In 1996 Perkins paid former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke $82,500 for his mailing list. At the time, Perkins was the campaign manager for a right-wing Republican candidate for the US Senate in Louisiana. The Federal Election Commission fined the campaign Perkins ran $3,000 for attempting to hide the money paid to Duke.

Donald Trump is once again showing his utter contempt for the First Amendment by claiming that the four Democratic Congresswomen he has been viciously and inaccurately attacking in recent days don’t have a right to criticize the United States. He vowed that they won’t get away with it as long as he is president.

If there’s one thing that the Christian right’s adamant support for Donald Trump proves, it’s that all that talk about morality and sin being the root of our problems was a lie. All they really cared about was getting political power and influence, by whatever means necessary. Help me out here, Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council:

The Christian right is trotting out a new argument against laws that forbid discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation (but only that form of discrimination) as the Supreme Court considers the Masterpiece Cakeshop case. Making businesses serve gay people is slavery! Tony Perkins says so:

It’s time to spin the big wheel of wingnuttia and find out who is possessed by demons today. And it won’t even involve Gordon Klingenschmitt, the demon whisperer. We’ll start with the Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins, who says Eminem’s freestyle anti-Trump rap the other day was “demonic.”

E.W. Jackson, a black wingnut with a penchant for saying spectacularly stupid things, went on a rant on his radio show in which he claimed that the KKK and the left share a hatred for Christianity. Never mind that the KKK is actually a Christian group.

Uh oh. Did someone send Tony Perkins a v-neck sweater? Because the head of the Family Research Council is feeling all emasculated and stuff. And he’s worried that this is undermining our ability to all tough and strong and ready to go to war.
