The Family Research Council is terribly concerned about the two marriage equality cases slated to be heard by the Supreme Court at the end of March (as they should be). And they’re urging their followers to send messages to their senators and representatives to pressure the Supreme Court to rule against equality:

Much has been said and written over the last week or so about Dan Fincke’s proposed civility pledge. Some may be wondering what I think about it. So here it is: No, I won’t be taking the pledge (as I’ve told Dan directly), but that doesn’t mean there isn’t some merit to it and a lot of good ideas in his post about it.

The competition for the title of the most ignorant and obnoxious member of the U.S. House of Representatives is a lot like the heavyweight boxing division in the 70s, with so many contenders that it’s hard to tell who really deserves the belt. In an interview with Tony Perkins of the FRC, Rep. Tim Huelskamp took his best shot:

Rep. Louis Gohmert, who truly may be the dumbest man in Congress (I know, he has stiff competition), went on Tony Perkins’ radio show and threw a serious fit over the Pentagon ordering the removal of a cross from a building on a remote base in Afghanistan (because it violated longstanding military rules, by the way). Gohmert’s predictably idiotic response:

Here’s a video from Truth in Action and the Family Research Council encouraging people to “vote their values” to stop same-sex marriage. The video shows that not only does marriage equality make the baby Jesus cry, it makes a poor dad cry at the thought that his children are learning that gay people exist and have families and they shouldn’t be mistreated for that fact.

Wow. Even by wingnut standards, this conspiracy theory from Tony Perkins and Jerry Boykin is truly bizarre. On Perkins’ radio show, the two of them actually suggested that the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is responsible for a drop in the number of military people voting overseas (because it couldn’t be because we have far fewer troops on active duty, right?).

It’s not a coincidence that the religious right is simultaneously holding several different prayer events immediately before an election. Such events have two purposes: 1) to motivate religious right voters to go to the polls, and 2) to raise money for religious right organizations (both directly and by adding new names to their collective mailing lists for future fleecing).

If there’s one thing you can count on these days, it’s that the Christian right loonies will be making idiotic predictions of the end of America — doom, I tell you, doom — if Obama is reelected. Today’s version comes from Jim Garlow on Tony Perkins’ radio show:

Right Wing Watch notes that while Tony Perkins has been bragging to anyone who would listen that the Family Research Council had enormous influence over the Republican party platform, gay Republican groups remain hopeful that the tide is turning in their favor. Peter Montgomery attended an event hosted by two of those groups and got some interesting quotes:

Some of you may be familiar with the Commentator Accountability Project, which was created to inform media outlets of some of the more outrageous statements made by people they turned to for commentary, like Tony Perkins and others. When that project went live, howls of outrage went up from the religious right at this Stalin-style blacklisting. Here’s what Matt Barber and Peter LaBarbera said about it:

Poor Todd Akin. According to the Family Research Council, he didn’t say something appallingly ignorant and vile that dehumanizes rape victims — he’s just getting a “bad break.” And they stand behind him 100 percent because he agrees with them — and they agree with him — that rape victims should be forced to carry the rapist’s child.

In the aftermath of the shooting at the Family Research Center office in Washington, DC, the FRC is trying to use its victim status to get out of being called a hate group. But as Right Wing Watch points out, Tony Perkins defended the Ugandan ‘kill the gays’ bill against criticism from President Obama.
