Gurinder Osan: Photographs with a Difference

Gurinder Osan: Photographs with a Difference January 18, 2006

I wanted to bring some pictures of my life long friend (yeah we started together in school when we were less than three years!) – Gurinder Osan.  He is a photo editor at Associated Press and I think he is one heck of a photographer.

His photograph of “A family in northern India took refuge in a tent after a powerful earthquake in October in Kashmir” has made to the Photographs of the Year at New York Times for 2005 in the World Category!!

In fact, a blogger Steve Mount has discovered Guri’s skills and art also and blogged on him and says this:

The photo that appeared on the front page of the New York Times yesterday is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. Both Janet and I first mistook it for a painting. The caption is “A family in northern India had a makeshift tent yesterday, but with wintry weather near a crisis is at hand.” The image is a classic composition of mother and child, surrounded by a white billowing tent and what looks like smoke or fog. Looking for it today, I did a Google image search for Gurinder Osan and was just amazed at what I saw: pictures of natural beauty, human beauty, political unrest, natural disaster and sports, every one of them striking in composition and beauty. I’m guessing that he works for AP, since they share most photo credits with him. I’d love to know more.

Guri posted on his blog and Steve followed it up with another post ..

Given below are some of Guri’s most recent pictures – except the last one … which is from Tsunami aftermath.. a similar picture by Arko Dutta won the Best picture at the World Press Photo contest.  I guess the reason why Guri’s – I believe MUCH better version – did not get so noticed was because Reuter was able to publish a much richer version on its site as opposed to a smaller pixel version by AP!

These pictures are good … but I have my favorites of Guri that I have seen him taking through all these years – have some adorning my house too!
