3 Ways Sufi Spiritual Healing Helps Heal Trauma

During my final semester of college, about 30 years ago, I worked at a bank in downtown Austin, Texas. One sunny Friday afternoon, the bank was robbed. I heard the sound of a gun cocked right behind me, and the voice, “Don’t move. Everybody down on the ground.”

The sawed off shotgun was cocked right in the center of my back – actually a little to my left side.

The bank robber got the money and made his escape. No one was hurt in that incident. I felt relieved, and later went out to celebrate that we all survived unharmed.

However, about a month later, I started getting sick. Sharp pains and muscle spasms were contorting my back, taking me down to my knees at times. They were right in the space where the gun had been cocked.

Severe digestive dysfunction followed, and I was eventually diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.

The doctors said it had no cure. Once you have it, you have to live with it. They could only prescribe steroids and recommend surgery.

However, I knew I just had a gun still stuck in my back. The shock of the incident had frozen the energy of the gun in my mid-back, and a part of me was still expecting an explosion at any minute.

In fact, inside my colon, the explosion had erupted into ulceration and inflammation. I knew that drugs and surgery could not fix this.

This was the beginning of my journey into alternative healing – a turning point for which I am immensely grateful!

Trauma is very real and all too common. At our University, a number of our students are either healing from trauma or practitioners who work with trauma patients.

We frequently get asked the question of how Sufi Spiritual Healing helps people to heal trauma. So, we added this question to our list of Frequently Asked Questions.

In the following video, Dr. Rahima Susan Schmall describes 3 ways in which Sufi Spiritual Healing helps people to heal from trauma.

Dr. Rahima Susan Schmall, Ph.D., R.N., is a practicing psychologist and Spiritual Healing Practitioner. She is a faculty member at The University of Spiritual Healing & Sufism and chair of the Department of Spiritual Healing & Counseling for Physical and Mental Illness.

Of course, I don’t want to leave you hanging. The bank robber went on to rob a credit union the following week. That one did not go as smoothly for him, and it was much more traumatic for the victims of his crimes. The bank robber took hostages and killed a police officer. The event ended with the robber’s death.

As for me, in the healing process, my ulcerative colitis was healed, along with hypoglycemia and fibrocystic disease. I am extremely healthy today, physically, mentally and emotionally far beyond any state I could have imagined prior to the robbery. As for the spiritual wellness – words cannot describe the Indescribable! However, the word exquisite comes to mind.

I am in awe and gratitude for the gifts I’ve received, including being guided to my spiritual teacher, Shaykh Muhammad al-Jamal, and to the Sufi path and to what is now The University of Spiritual Healing & Sufism.

A message I’d like to share from this experience – if you are experiencing physical or mental illness, and you’ve been told there is no cure, please do not give up. The point of view you are hearing is from the person giving it. According to that professional’s training and beliefs, there may be no cure. However, there are many systems and bodies of knowledge that may have different answers.

If you believe in healing and you want it for yourself, or your loved ones want healing for themselves, your path is between you, your deep heart and God. Follow your heart.

God is the All-Knowing, the Truth and the Only True Healer.

Blessings and Gratitude,
Mastura Graugnard
