I pose this question as an experiment. I believe there must be at least ten different definitions as to "what is a Christian"
Here in is the point to this question. If there are so many ways to define what it is to be Christian, how then can we be united? Is a Christian just a) anyone who is good?
b)someone who has picked up a Bible left in a hotel room?
c) someone who goes to Mass on Easter and Christmas?
d) someone who goes to church every Sunday?
e)None of the above.
Sadly, its e, none of the above. Yet there are those who really believe just because they are American, they are Christian. Satan has done an excellent job in bluring the truth of being a Christian. Todays views allow feelings and tolerance to count as to our definition of who is a Christian. I say not. Our feelings dont have a place in this definition. What we feel, what we want, our expectations and our hopes are not going to help us define who is a Christian. The only valid resource here would be the Bible. We only find "Christian" twice in scripture, once in Acts 26:28 and again in 1Peter 4:16. In both cases it is one who is a follower of Christ. Well reader, we come to yet another question. What does it mean to follow Christ? Some sixteen times in the NT does Christ bid "Follow Me". While i'm no Bible scholar, its very aparent to me in these verses Christt bids for us to drop what we are doing and follow ( act like, imitate, worship, adore, have fellowship with Me) Can we say we do this? I know many people who call themselves Christians but on the day when they face Christ, He will tell them "Depart from Me, I know you not" Lk 13:27.
I know this is going to make some of you upset and others down right angry. By the way, God knows this. He knows His message is caustic to those who do not believe. Flat out, the message of Salvation is offensive so some yet sweet nectar to others. So again I pose te question, Who is a Christian? You might start by asking yourself,
"if I were to die today, do I know for certain i would go to Heaven?"
Think carefully on this because if you dont know, you need to figure it out. If you think to yourself "sure, i work hard and am a good person" thats not good enough. We know this because the Bible tells us in Eph 2:8-9 how its God not us.
How does one become a Christian? Why is the message of salvation so offensive to some? Its because we can do nothing to receive it. We want so bad to control our lives but this one thing we cannot control. Sure, some have come up with some ways to make us feel like we make a "decision" but scripture tells us that God knew us before time! The Bible also tells we were DEAD in our trespasses.
I ask you, if you throw a life ring to a drowned man, can he save himself? No, likewise this is our natural state. Its only through Gods grace that we can find ourselves "saved" from eternal seperation from God. Our response then must be a complete life change. Turn from sin, repent, and seek first the kingdom of God. This we will know by their fruits. A christian is one who seeks after God w/ all his heart and all his mind and his fruits are obvious.
