Today's world is full of divisions. Everywhere we turn we find polarization, partisanship, divorce; all ways of dividing us. Our so-called leaders today are locked in a struggle over who is right and wrong led by a man who promised to be a uniter but instead turned out to be the most divisive president ever in history. The media feeds the fire of this polarization for its own selfish reasons, money. What we really need is find a way to come together as a people; something we can all agree on.
9/11 united our nation in the same manner that the attack on Pearl Harbor unified another generation. Do we really want to wait for another attack on our country to find a reason to come together? Let's find one thing that everyone can agree on; just one. Because if we can find one, then we can find two. It will be like the domino effect. Americans will feel enabled instead of defeated. Americans will stop focusing on our differences and finally work together towards a common cause. The trick is to find that one thing. Is it even possible?
I say it is and it is a very simple concept at that. The issue — freedom to choose.
One thing all people of faith, no matter what that faith is, can agree on is that our God gives us freedom to choose. He gives us the right to choose to believe in him or not to believe in him. He gives us the right to choose to study his word or not. He gives the the right to choose how we live our lives each day. No matter what faith, God gives his people the right to choose. This is an inalienable right.
The neat thing about this is that even people who don't believe in God can agree with the right to choose. They call it free will. Surprise, surprise. That's what people of faith call it as well — free will. God doesn't beat us up and make us believe. He gives us a choice to believe. So here is that first issue that we can all agree on.
The Declaration of Independence declares:We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
Note the words……"AMONG THESE".
Any government or organization that attempts to abridge, deny or legislate an individual's inalienable right to choose is not representative of God no matter what they call themselves or claim to represent.
There are those who say that our Constitution or Bill of Rights does not guarantee our inalienable right to choose. So the time has come to abandon our differences and come together to guarantee that no government, no political party, no President, will attempt to deny this right. I propose the following amendment to the Bill of Rights.
"The right to choose is an inalienable right that should not be denied or abridged by legislation of Congress, order of Executive Branch, or interpretation by Judicial Branch of the government of the United States or any other forms of government there of".
In other words, no branch of our government shall deny our inalienable right of choice or make laws that seek to prevent or impair that right to choose. Any gov't or group that seeks to prevent or impair my right to choose for myself, is morally wrong.
Yes, here is our issue. Here is something that all people can boldy embrace.
Why is this important? There are many other issues that are much more pressing than an Amendment to our Constitution, especially an amendment that many might deem as unnecessary.
The reason is simple. If we can come together on one thing, we can come together on other things as well. We just have to find a starting point to start the process of reconciliation in our nation.
Can you imagine any politician arguing against such an amendment? It would be political suicide to blatantly oppose it. No, the spin would be more along the lines, "it's unnecessary". These are the people who don't get it. These are the politicians that must be replaced because they think they know better than the people who put them there.
The 9th Amendment states : The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.
The founding forefathers believed that the 9th Amendment would cover inalienable rights and not every single issue need to be clearly defined so that there would be flexibility as times changed. However, ironically enough it is the conservatives, those who preach about their God louder than the rest, who seek to legislate our inalienable rights according to their beliefs. Therefore it is necessary to Amend the Constitution to protect our right to choose for ourselves. The alternative is to let some conservative supreme court justices legislate our inalienable rights in the forseeable future.
