While I respect House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, I disagree with her stance regarding Flag Certificates.
The certificate in question read "this flag was flown in honor of Marcel Larochelle, my grandfather, for his dedication and love of God, country and family."
The Architect's office, citing its own rules, returned the certificate with the word "God" excised.
Now I don't mean to turn this into a debate over who has spiritual values, and in this regard this is not a question of Republican vs Democrat. This is a question of freedom. One of the fundamental freedoms of the United States is the seperation of Church and State. There are many who interpet this as the removal of God from all State activity. This is a terrible misinterpetation of the pretext.
When we remove God from the state, then we say that atheism is superior to religion. In so doing we create a Nation in which Church and State mandate law. And this is a contradiction to the very pretext to the seperation of Church and State.
The Boy Scout Oath states
On my honor, I will do my best, to do my duty, to God and my Country. To obey the Scout Law. To help other people at all times. To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.
The Scout Law states:
A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.
The inscription of Andrew LaRochelle for his Grandfather was the embodiment of this virtue.
My Scoutmaster, Dr Leon Aller Jr, the 1985 Family Doctor of the Year; (and honored before Congress for his Humanitarian aid) spoke often of the three points of the Scout Law.
God, Others and Self, please help me to remember Lord to love all three.
This was one of his two great words of wisdom, the other, "Don't eat the yellow snow."
The Boy Scouts is an international orginization. It shows no preference to any religion. There are Scouts acrossed the world of many faiths.
So when a young man shows his committment to the values of this orginization, we should as a nation embrace his devotion.
