When God Answers a Prayer

When God Answers a Prayer 2013-05-09T06:09:11-06:00

This is a little story about an answered prayer from the Lord. Back in 1995 when I worked as a mail “boy” (I was 26 years old), “it was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” Charles Dickens.

My job duties also entailed: getting coffee, filing, handing out faxes, supply room et cetera. It was humiliating for a muscular guy in his prime to have people (men and women) shout out “Stan can you get me a pencil” or “Stan can you get me post its.” I had the key to the supply room, so I had no choice but to go fetch.

One day, it was getting too much for me to do all of these lowly tasks. It seemed like I was the only one doing these types of tasks. My mom and step dad who are Catholic Charismatics, taught me hold the Bible and pray for the Lord to speak to me through scripture and randomly open the Bible and randomly put my finger on a point on the page. This is done for special petitions. One day when the humiliation of my job duties became too much for me, I did make a special petition to the Lord. My petition was ‘Lord I cannot take it, everything I do at work seems unimportant. I love the people I work with, but I’m going to quit if you don’t help me.’ I held out the Bible and randomly opened it to The Book of Matthew and randomly placed my finger on Matthew 23: 11, 12. It read “ The more lowly your service to others, the greater you are, to be the greatest, be a servant, but those who think themselves great, shall be humbled and disappointed, but those who humbles themselves shall be exalted.”
