Faithful Democrats Fellowship Recipients

Faithful Democrats Fellowship Recipients January 25, 2009

This distinction is given annually to top emerging leaders in America’s progressive faith community.

Recipients of the fellowship will find that the award entails fellowship in two senses of the word.  First, this award brings with it the prestige of being recognized for excellence in leadership in the progressive faith community.  Fellowship recipients are located around the country, and they have a diversity of experiences and come from a variety of backgrounds.  What they all have in common is that they have demonstrated their outstanding talents and have gone above and beyond in the name of the common good.  During their fellowship year, these emerging leaders contribute regular columns to the Faithful Democrats site, where they reflect on the political issues of our day and shape the public discourse at the intersection of religion and politics.  Whether from our nation’s best divinity and public policy schools, as leading public servants in local, state, and federal government, or as directors of non-profits, political advocacy groups, and other community initiatives, they share the passion and compassion that sets them apart as Faithful Democrats Fellows.

Second, recipients of the honor will also find that the fellowship experience is more than an award — it is also a community.  The fellowship program specifically aims to bring together up-and-coming talent to meet with many of the foremost voices in progressive politics.  This is the second definition of fellowship: recipients get to know other emerging leaders in their fellowship class who have received this distinction while also having the chance to connect with some of the most prominent figures in the progressive faith community.  By becoming part of a closely knit network of progressive thinkers and activists through exclusive skill-building events, specialized career counseling, and conference calls with distinguished guest speakers, these emerging leaders are offered valuable opportunities unique to the Faithful Democrats Fellowship.  As a result, this community becomes not only a powerful and meaningful asset for personal and professional development for fellowship recipients, it also serves as a source of inspiration for these rising leaders while they take on the challenge of shaping the debate about the public policy, political, and theological issues that face our party and our nation.

Jonathan Patrick Levine

Jonathan Patrick Levine is very excited to be a part of this wonderful community.  Raised by a couple of Democratic Party Activists, Jonathan Graduated from Cornell College, in Mt. Vernon, IA (“The real Cornell”) with a degree in Comparative Religion, and Theatre.  So it’s only logical that he would take this degree and forge a career in political campaigns.  After all, as the joke goes, you take a little Religion, and add a splash of theatre, and you have politics!  In his short but exciting career, Jonathan has had the chance to travel nearly the entire lengths of the country, working to bring Democrats to power.  He started his career working in a way he highly recommends to everyone: working for a candidate who is completely unopposed.  No primary, no general, just victory!  Since then he has worked on races on the local level (as co-field director of a race in St. Louis), State level (working as Campaign Manager for a race for State Treasurer in Missouri), Federal Level (working as Regional Field and GOTV director in southern Florida) and on the Presidential Level (working for Senator John Edwards in Iowa and Nevada).

She then became point-person and founder of the Beatitudes Society chapter at Union.  Her continuous interest in faith and politics is rooted in the belief that oppression and injustice can be eliminated–and faith restored–with policy such that the Democratic Party provides and hope that the Christian faith proclaims.
