Not a big event, really, I had invited our local state rep candidate to walk a few streets in my precinct. Our candidate is a COGIC pastor. This is a pretty interersting street, integrated, a mix of retirees and professionals. And we met neighbors and chatted. I kept introducing my candidate, pointing out who was who in the neighborhood — the retirees with the son in the Navy, the Orthodox priest (Irish and a hard R) — and then as we were on one side of the street, I pointed out another neighbor.
–That's Mr W. He's real Right to Life.
–Really?
And with that he sprinted across the street to say hello and begin a conversation.
Christian politics is like that: we cross the street to make friends with "enemies." Politics — retail politics — is never simply about the division of goods (though it is that), it is about the building of community.
