Value of Public Theology

Value of Public Theology 2013-05-09T06:22:54-06:00

It is because of my faith in justice and equality that make my voting
patterns Democratic and a proud liberal.

Let us keep the discussion open and live up the standards of past
public theologians by raising the bar of public debate and hold America
to a higher standard.

Public theology is an open discussion of issues in regards to our
society and governmental affiars from a Christian perspective. Quite
simply it is the voice of every pastor, theology and Christian believer
to speak their minds on issues of public concern. A revolutionary in
this area was none other than Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who utilized
God’s message to speak towards the equality of all people particularly
blacks during the Civil Rights movement. With him taking the pulpit by
his grasp he led a nation to change its voting policies, segregation
practices and many people’s hearts. In his short life he furthered the
goals of justice and equality more than any other person in modern
history.
Since his time public theology has been exploited by conservative
Christian leaders to rally their followers to the Republican Party for
the past 25 years. James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and
others have used their pulpits to endorse Republican candidates. But I
am not here to be a public theologian only to endorse Democrats
(although I am allowed to do so because I am not doing it for or from
the head of a 501c3, a non-profit charitable organization). I will call
out a Democrat for their stance or for their actions, much like the
Foley scandal, just as fast as I would call out a Republican.
I am here to be a public theologian to call out injustice, to call out
inequality, and to show the love of God for all of the human race. God
loves us regardless and I believe envisions a world where all people
are created equal and treated equally under the law. Public theology is
not to be used soley for partisan gain but more for the gain of justice.
I see more and more people of faith with liberal tendancies coming out
of the woodwork, practicing their faith, holding each other and their
leaders accountable all the while spreading the message.
It is because of my faith in justice and equality that make my voting
patterns Democratic and a proud liberal.
Let us keep the discussion open and live up the standards of past
public theologians by raising the bar of public debate and hold America
to a higher standard.
