The power of the White House Office of Faith-Based Neighborhood Partnerships is that it indeed harnesses this greater force for good. President Obama recognizes that not all Americans are people of faith, but he creates room for all of us to express our greatest convictions in service to our neighbors. (more…) Read more

I believe that what was more important than race in this inauguration was a return to the values that defined the modern Democratic Party. The same way someone feels truly cleansed of sin after a full immersion baptism, I feel Democrats needed to be a part of this ceremony: to be present there, to feel brought in again, to be a part of a country that many of us felt disconnected from for eight long years. Recently, as a new fellowship writer for Faithful Democrats, I have been contemplating the role politics plays in religion and my obligation to be both an ambassador for Jesus Christ and a stalwart supporter of the Democratic Party – even when there are platforms the Party may embrace that I find questionable. A new progressive Christian movement has been forming and it is exciting that many want to "preach the good news to the poor" but that is only half of the Prophet Isaiah’s message, now we are moving into the second part of this word: standing beside the poor as they become oaks of righteousness and speak for themselves.  (more…) Read more

Pungent piles of Republican nay-saying to the American jobs and stimulus package is getting so deep in Washington that shovel-ready jobs are needed to shovel it all to the dump. Could this be the Republican job creation package? The rigid ideological orthodoxy leading Republicans to oppose the jobs bill ignores the pain of middle and working Americans. We have seen this approach already and we have suffered its outcome too deeply. Their answer to the imploding economic situation is much... Read more

Barack Obama has truly revolutionized the political campaign. He has recreated FDR’s fireside chats with his weekly You Tube addresses, taken Internet fund-raising beyond anyone’s imagination, and is accepting the public’s policy ideas and discourse into his administration through his website at change.gov. He is reaching out to all Americans by email, text, and live addresses – all in real-time – and all through your portable PC. This is high-level democracy, literally, almost at the speed light. But, it is... Read more

Most Pro-Choice political leaders are quick to say that they are not pro-Abortion, they are interested in abortion reduction without outlawing the procedures. Many pro-life leaders similarly claim that they are also committed to reducing the numbers of abortion even as they seek a final legal solution of defining the right to life. There are a couple of bills coming back for consideration in Congress that will test the truthfulness of these politicians’ claims.   (more…) Read more

But, as I find the pictures of George Bush leaving Washington DC exhilerating, I also feel a sense of the tremendous weight that Barack Obama must feel at this moment with the overwhelming challenges in foreign and domestic policy. Now that the former is gone… I have begun to wonder if there was anything good that Dubya left Obama and in reflection of the past eight years were there any positives that could have come from the Bush administration. I... Read more
