The other day, while trying to figure out the relevance of Rihanna’s lyrics to the Star Trek film she had written them for, I speculated that Spock and Uhura might break up in this movie. And, well, what do you know: our first clip from the film seems to depict just that, though without all the layers of angst that Rihanna’s song provides.
Here is the clip:
It’s interesting to see McCoy step in as Uhura walks away. When the first JJ Abrams film came out several years ago, it was noted that Uhura had essentially taken McCoy’s place as the third member of Star Trek’s central triumvirate; I even argued that, whereas Kirk had once been the “heart” that guided Spock’s “head” and McCoy’s “gut”, Uhura now seemed to be the “heart” that was holding Spock’s “head” and Kirk’s “gut” in balance. Will the new film shift these characters back to their original roles?
As ever, we shall see when the film comes out July 22 — just three weeks from now!Update: Paramount just posted several other new videos, too.
First, there are these 15-second “character” vignettes (and note how McCoy’s “It’s definitely you” is shown from a completely different angle here):
And then there are these TV spots:
