Child abuse matters. So does justice. Accusations that Woody Allen abused his adoptive daughter, Dylan Farrow, recently filled the headlines… Here’s an excerpted part of the “Open Letter” from Dylan Farrow that was reprinted in the New York Times. Please read it and then read part of Woody Allen’s excerpted response. Who do you believe?   *** (A note from Nicholas Kristof) “In 1993, accusations that Woody Allen had abused his adoptive daughter, Dylan Farrow, filled the headlines, part of... Read more

Donald Drew 1920 — 2014, was a L’Abri worker when I was living at that evangelical retreat and study center founded by my parents in Switzerland.  After I ran away from a British boarding school in 1968, in 1969 Donald was assigned to be my tutor. He’d been a teacher in England before coming to work with my parents. I learned to love Shakespeare from Donald. I also broke his rib. When we’d get tired of reading Macbeth and Jane... Read more

(Just Sold) Pure Air, Water, Life Oil on canvas  10 x 10 Eight years ago I started to paint again after an almost 30 year gap. Once I had remembered how to hold a brush again I put together a collection of about 40 paintings: Flowers I grow with my grandchildren and what I see out my window of the marsh and river, bay and ocean nearby where Genie and I walk. I started posting some of the work... Read more

Let’s be honest. Sure some smart young people who “come to Christ” are deeply sincere. Then life happens to them and they come to see that nothing is quite as true as it was cracked up to be that night they got “saved.” Then they have a choice: stick with the program, because that’s how they earn their living and/or they now are known as “Christians” so backing down is hard since their identity is on the line– or bail.... Read more

When I began to go to an Orthodox church in 1989 I wanted to find a way to escape myself, my past and my culture. It gradually sank in that the monastic tradition of seeking my inner “desert,” in which to experience God through stillness, could only be cultivated by the practice of ritual, liturgy, prayer and fasting– not by argument let alone by a better idea, or God forbid, by repackaging. It gradually sank in that when I was... Read more

(Tulips, Wind & Sun Oil on canvas 24 x 24 by Frank Schaeffer) In 1990 I joined the Greek Orthodox Church because, in the words of Umberto Eco, I aspired “to the construction of narratives capable of providing [me] with an explanation and a model, an exemplary image.” At first I missed the point of my escape from my evangelical past almost altogether. I argued the finer points of theology and church history with my long-suffering evangelical mother and sisters.... Read more

When I was 17 the first painting I sold was to Mrs. David Rockefeller at my first art show. This was in New York City at the Frisch Gallery. Next came a show in Switzerland at the Chante Pierre Gallery in Aubonne (near Geneva) and a show in London soon after. Then I quit painting because there was more money and power and ego in selling Jesus. I was an idiot! I started painting again about 10 years ago. Here’s... Read more
