As I write this, my blood is boiling at the sheer ignorance and hatred shown in the recent wave of anti-transgender legislation being proposed and passed in several U.S. states. The blatant discrimination and marginalization of transgender individuals is nothing short of appalling, and it is sickening to see these laws being justified with supposed Christian values.
Let’s be clear: denying access to healthcare, education, and employment to transgender individuals is a direct attack on their basic human rights. It is an affront to justice and fairness, and it promotes a culture of hate and violence against a vulnerable minority. It is beyond comprehension that lawmakers would choose to target and harm some of the most marginalized members of our society in such a blatant and harmful way.
Anyone claiming to follow Jesus should be able to recognize that love, compassion, and justice are central to their faith. However, these laws are not reflective of those values at all. In fact, they are a complete contradiction to the principles of fairness and compassion that are central to all major religions, including Christianity.
To claim that these laws are based on Christian values is not only false, it is a manipulation of religious teachings to justify hateful and discriminatory behavior. It is hypocritical to claim to follow a faith that promotes love and compassion, yet support laws that harm and marginalize some of the most vulnerable members of our society.
I implore those who identify as Christian to speak out against these harmful laws. It is time for Christians to live up to the values of love, compassion, and justice that they say are central to their faith and to work towards a world where all individuals are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve, regardless of their gender identity.
We cannot allow hateful and discriminatory laws to be justified with supposed religious values. We must fight against this injustice, hate, false teaching and oppression, and stand together in solidarity.
There have always been and always will be transgender people. And they have always been and always will be beloved.
