Non-Idolators as American Idols

Non-Idolators as American Idols

MTV News reports that “more than half of this year’s crop of finalists — including Danny Gokey, Michael Sarver, Kris Allen, Scott MacIntyre, Matt Giraud and Lil Rounds — either have a strong affiliation with the church or are worship leaders in their communities.”

The reporter wonders why that is. Well, consider that just about the only place in the culture that anybody sings anymore is in church! That and baseball games. (That observation is not original with me.) Also Karaoke bars. But that’s about it.

I remember when I was a kid my parents would have friends over for dinner and afterwards they would gather around the piano and sing 1940’s standards. Now, we get our music from electronic devices and listen to other people sing, rather than sing ourselves. Except at church.

Maybe the church will once again become the major patron and source of the arts; in this case, of singing.
