The latest regeneration of Doctor Who is a woman, played by Jodie Whittaker.

The actress is best known for her role as Beth Latimer on Broadchurch (a really good mystery, especially the first season).  She played the bereaved mother, co-starring with David Tennant, a former Doctor Who.

In the series, the character of the time-and-space traveling Time Lord regenerates every time he dies.  That is, every time the actor playing Doctor Who quits the show or is replaced.  This will be the 13th Doctor.

Whovians [what you call Doctor Who fans], do you mind the character being played by a woman?

Obviously, gender politics is a factor with BBC, but can this work in terms of the ongoing story?

From Jodie Whittaker becomes first woman to play Doctor Who | Daily Mail Online:

Broadchurch star Jodie Whittaker is to be the first ever woman to play Doctor Who, it has been announced.

The identity of the Thirteenth Time Lord was revealed on BBC One and social media around the world after the Men’s Wimbledon Final today.

However, the decision to cast a female actress in the role, which has previously been played by men and is currently held by Peter Capaldi, has divided fans.

While many people are praising the BBC and the show’s writers for choosing a female actress, others are saying it’s ‘political correctness gone mad’.

Twitter user David Stephens said: ‘Sorry this is so called equality, women’s rights, political correctness gone mad-Dr Who was written/created as a man! End of.’

Clive Walton agreed, writing on his Twitter page: ‘No the character is a man not a woman! As usual the BBC have to muddy the waters through political correctness that’s what they do!’. . . .

New head writer and executive producer Chris Chibnall, who takes over from Steven Moffat on the next series, made the decision to cast the first ever woman in the iconic role.

He said: ‘I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman and we’re thrilled to have secured our number one choice.

‘Her audition for The Doctor simply blew us all away. Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role. The Thirteenth Doctor is on her way.’
