“One can say that in Christianity the extraordinary has become ordinary, but also that the ordinary has become extraordinary, the usual unusual, the common uncommon.”
So said Wilhelm Loehe, the 19th century Lutheran of the confessional revival who sent pastors to America in support of the newly-formed Missouri Synod. The passage is quoted in full in the Treasury of Daily Prayer reading for October 25. I’ve seen a similar statement by Einar Billing in regards to the doctrine of vocation. Loehe had an even broader application in mind.
What do you think this means? How is it true? What are some examples of the extraordinary becoming ordinary and the ordinary becoming extraordinary in Christianity and the Christian life?
