Where I come from, mental illness is considered to be a form of demon possession. I was a star student and a youth leader in my church when I had my first panic attack. As a senior in high school, I felt stuck. Lost. The shame was nearly as unbearable as the panic attacks. The sad thing is, they became progressively worse over the next decade.

When I tell people that a suicide attempt at the age of 28 is what saved my life, they find it hard to believe. But it’s true. Before that time,  I was never told that you can be a Christian and have a mental illness. I believed that my struggle with depression and situational anxiety made me less than a “real” Christian. I had also never been given permission to admit I needed help. In the Christian circles where I was raised, Christianity and brokenness couldn’t co-exist.
