Numbers 35: Spiritual Pollution

Numbers 35: Spiritual Pollution July 31, 2012

“Do not defile the land where you live and where I dwell, for I, the Lord, dwell among the Israelites.” -Numbers 35:34

The Bible speaks of spiritual pollution. What is it? Spiritual Pollution occurs when God’s people live sinfully against the Lord. In Numbers 35, the specific reference was to “bloodshed,” what we would call violence or murder, but the concept of living unclean or unholy before God is a recurring one in the writings of Moses.

Today, many Christians speak of returning to our Christian roots in one form or another. While this is not exactly the same as the relationship Israel had with God, there is a sense in which we who are Christians are called to live and call others to live according to God’s plan for our lives. Why? When we don’t, there are consequences, both individually and collectively as a nation.

God often allowed Israel to experience judgment due to its sins. Could God allow the same for nations today that do the same? We may not have the ability to point to claim a particular problem is due to God’s judgment, but there is a sense in which the nation who follows the Lord will be blessed by him. It must begin with each of us living for God personally. Second, we must call others to faith in Christ. Only when spiritual renewal takes place can we expect changes to the issues of our society.
