2 Samuel 20: Team Leadership

2 Samuel 20: Team Leadership February 5, 2013

23 Joab was over Israel’s entire army; Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Kerethites and Pelethites; 24 Adoniram was in charge of forced labor; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was recorder; 25 Sheva was secretary; Zadok and Abiathar were priests; 26 and Ira the Jairite was David’s priest. -2 Samuel 20:23-26

David’s leadership was shared leadership. Rather than reigning as a power-seeking tyrant, history and Scripture records his team of closest advisers.

They include Benaiah, leader of certain lands. Adoniram directed forced labor or what we would call prison labor today. Jehosphaphat served as recorder, keeping official records; Sheva worked as secretary, perhaps more like today’s press secretary. Zadok and Abiathar were the leading priests. David’s personal priest was Ira.

We see both their names and their roles. Both are important. Each worker in an organization is valuable as an individual as well for their efforts. In your home, school, or workplace, the same is true. You and those around you are of great value to God and should be to you as well. Also, each person’s contribution is valuable. We each bring certain strengths and skills to the table that can be used to improve the lives of others. Let us work to use our abilities to serve the Lord and help others to do the same.
