“Set up the tabernacle according to the plan shown you on the mountain.” -Exodus 26:30
We often look to Moses as the man who received the law of God we call the Torah. Yet God also revealed to him something beyond words. God called it “the plan.”
The directions for the tabernacle were clear. In fact, a creative team could rebuild the temple today simply based on a close study of the instructions found in Scripture. But God not only gave Moses words. He visually showed him a mental image of how the tabernacle and its items should be constructed and how it would look.
As Christians, we look to the Bible for words of wisdom, yet it’s interesting that God appears to sometimes communicate to his people through mental images or visions. While we must be careful to evaluate such thoughts for consistence with what God has already revealed, we cannot discount God’s other forms of communication.
Today, God has clearly called you to mediate on his Word. As you do, you may find he also guides your steps through thoughts that reflect his application of those words in your own life. Yet to accurate understand God’s voice, we must walk closely with him.
Further, we must remember that in the situation of Moses, much attention was given to matters of purity. We dare not expect to hear God’s voice clearly when we pollute our minds with images that are not pleasing to him. Whether the content we consume online, in print, or in video or audio form, visual ideas either draw us closer to our Lord or move us further away from his will.
