Numbers 25: God and Other Intimate Relationships–a Strange Mix

“While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women,who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods. The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods.” -Numbers 25:1-2

Sexuality and spirituality are linked more than we often realize. When a guy chooses a relationship with a girl who follows another god, chances are that he will soon consent to her system of religion. Of course, this can happen with women as well, but Numbers 25 emphasizes a time when several men were led to a different religion because of their sexual relationships.

Many of us know this intuitively, yet we can be blind to it when it happens to us. Even worse, many “Christian” marriages have taken place when a Christian woman’s significant other has “converted” to Christ while they were dating, then later reveals his experience was to appease his girlfriend rather than to serve Christ.

Let’s be honest–sex influences our spiritual thinking and actions. That’s part of why God calls for us to honor him with our body. When we do, we make decisions based on what will honor him rather than choosing faith based on our dating relationships. Seek the Lord first; let your love for him be what guides your relationships with others today.
